McDonald’s Latin America experienced years of negative sales due to inflation and currency devaluation. The brand needed to regain lost customers with moderate incomes while increasing appeal and frequency among higher income customers. The solution was a “barbell” strategy – a three-tiered menu featuring the global core menu (Big Mac, Quarter Pounder, etc.) plus a new premium line (salads and large burgers) as well as a value menu (aka the Dollar Menu with value-engineered new products).
